README.TXT File 3Com Corporation 3Com EtherLink III LAN PC Card (3C589 PC Card) Please read this file before installing the 3Com EtherLink III LAN PC Card. This file contains information that became available after the 3Com EtherLink III LAN PC Card User Guide went to the printer. This file is divided into three sections: General Information - Read for all network operating systems Novell NetWare Information - Read if you are using Novell NetWare Problems and Solutions - Provides solutions to common problems Important General Information ============================= The 3Com 3C589 works with laptops that contain Card Services. If you are not running Card Services on your system, please note that the 3C589 willl work with laptops that have an Intel PCMCIA (PC Card) controller or compatible. If Card Services are not installed, it might not work with other controllers. You may override some driver configuration paramters (IRQ, I/O base and CIS Memory base address). See the sample NET.CFG or PROTOCOL.INI files for proper syntax. Novell NetWare Information ========================== The 3C589 EtherLink III LAN EtherDisk contains a Novell NetWare DOS ODI Driver (3C589.COM), and a Novell NetWare OS\2 ODI driver (3C589.SYS). The 3C589.COM DOS ODI driver is Novell certified. The 3C589.SYS OS/2 ODI driver Novell certification is still in progress. If you are using 3Com's automatic installation program, AutoLink, delete references to any other network adapter in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file and in the NET.CFG file prior to executing AutoLink. You can delete the NET.CFG file, and a new one will be copied over. If you are using NetWare 4.X you may prefer to use Novell's Installation Program. Using the NetWare installer adds windows client support, provides NetWare User Tools for printing, and allows you to log in and out using Windows. Full-Duplex Operation ===================== The DOS ODI NetWare driver supports full-duplex operation (that is, sending and receiving data simultaneously). WARNING: You MUST be connected to a switched full-duplex Ethernet hub to use this feature (this feature disables collision detection). To enable this feature add the ODI Keyword "FULL DUPLEX" to the NET.CFG file. Updates and corrections to the 3Com EtherLink III LAN PC Card User Guide Page 4-6 - step #4 Copy the PROTOCOL.INI fragment from the NDIS\DOS subdirectory on the EtherDisk diskette to the \VINES subdirectory. Correction: Copy the PROTOCOL.INI fragment from the MSLANMAN.DOS\DRIVERS\ETHERNET\ELPC3 subdirectory. Page 4-19 - Step #4: Press Return to go back to the NDIS driver screen. Correction: Press Return to go back to the Update Driver screen. Page 6-5 - Figure 6-4: Diagnostic screen. Correction: The FIFO Built-in Self-test does not exit on the Diagnostic screen shown in Figure 6-4. Page 4-3 - Replace the Windows for WorkGroups driver installation instructions in the user guide with instructions in WFW.TXT file. The correct instructions can be accessed in two ways:(1) select Windows for WorkGroups in the main menu of the EtherDisk diskette, or (2)use a text editor to view the WFW.TXT file in the NDIS directory. Problems and Solutions ====================== Problem: Installation/Diagnostics does not seem to go past the "Please Wait..." prompt. Solution: In order to run the Installation/Diagnostics you must have at least 480K of conventional memory free. (You can check how much you have using the MEM command at the DOS prompt). If you have less than 480K, you can comment out items from the CONFIG.SYS or AUTOEXEC.BAT files to free up memory. Make sure that Card Services remains loaded. Another option is to reboot, and click on F8 when the "Starting DOS" message is displayed. A prompt appears telling you which items to load, and which items not to load. Problem: Installation/Diagnostics program seems to run at very slow pace. Solution: Make sure to have a memory manager installed. This will increase the performance. Problem: The system hangs when using the Toshiba 3400 or the Toshiba 1910CS machines, or the card does not function. Solution: If using Phoenix Card Services, modify the PCM.INI file to exclude memory locations C600 through C7FF. If you are using Phoenix Card Services Release 2.0 v1.0, upgrade to a newer version of Card Services and modify the PCM.INI file. Problem: The 3C589 PC Card has problems working with Phoenix Card Services Release 2.0 v1.0. For example, you may not be able to assign IRQ 5 to the 3C589 PC Card. Solution: Upgrade to a newer Phoenix Card Services version, or try using the 3C589 PC Card without Card Services. Problem: When you run installation/diagnostics on the Toshiba 4900 or Cannon Innova Book 150C machines, "No PC Card detected" message may appear. Solution: Modify the PCM.INI file to exclude interrupt 0xA. The correct syntax is: exclude_irq = 0xA Problem: When using an Epson ActionNote 700CX in Enabler mode (not using Card Services), if the 3C589 PC Card is inserted after the PC is booted, you may get "Driver not loaded" or "Interrupt 0". Solution: Set the "PCMCIA Card Boot" parameter to DISABLE in the BIOS setup. See your Epson user guide for information on changing the BIOS setup. Problem: With a TI TravelMate 4000M, and other PCs that use Sound chips, it may load the driver correctly but will not attach to the server. Solution: The TI 4000M's SOUND SYSTEM uses IRQ 5. Choose another IRQ (for example: 3 or 10) and IO address (example: 300 or 360) and set it in the configuration files. See the sample NET.CFG and PROTOCOL.INI. Problem: The DOS NDIS driver installed on a Digital HiNote Ultra CT475 PC may loose the network connection in a Windows background session. When the problem occurs, the error message displayed is "this device does not exist in the network! abort, fail?". Solution: Only use in Windows foreground sessions or in a Windows DOS box. Problem: "No PC Card detected" message appears when you use the 3C589 PC Card in an IBM 720. Solution: The 3C589 PC Card is not compatible with the IBM 720 machine. (%VER README.TXT v1.1g)
